Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of group is OPEN?

OPEN is an advocacy group and a registered Political Action Committee (PAC).

Who are the people that make up OPEN?

We’re a group of concerned local parents, caregivers, educators, and community members who value the crucial role that community elementary schools play in rural districts.

How does OPEN think the OCSD Board of Education should address a potential school reconfiguration?

We advocate for a thorough assessment of the contributing factors that led to the board’s recent resolution to close Phoenicia and Woodstock elementary schools. We seek an evaluation of approaches that can be taken to build a school system that values the importance of community schools while providing improved services and facilities to our students, without unnecessary disruption that is not supported by the majority of student families and voters.

This assessment needs to be done in an inclusive way that incorporates ideas from the community including current, former, and future parents, faculty, and staff.

A school closure would be disruptive to a group of children whose education has already been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, so it’s especially important that we get this right.

Doesn’t the district need to act fast because it is in financial trouble?

The Onteora Central School District is in sound financial health. The New York City-owned Ashokan Reservoir and state-owned forests together account for nearly 27% of the total tax levy, and they’re not going anywhere. There is no risk of default, and therefore no rush to close schools to save money. Additionally, the previous board’s plan to consolidate to one central campus would require extensive and expensive renovations, underscoring that saving money is not the goal.

How can I get involved?

OPEN is a grassroots organization and we welcome any and all helping hands. Send us an email at saveourvillageschools@gmail.com and let us know you’re interested in helping out.

What does OPEN use donations for?

OPEN’s members work entirely on a volunteer basis and do not derive any income from the organization. We use donations to cover marketing, overhead, and administrative costs.
